About Coastal Writing Retreats
We aim to provide protected time and space for writers to make progress on their projects away from work and other distractions.
Our structured writing retreats are delivered in small groups (5-10 writers) and are for those who want to try a different and more successful way to achieve and celebrate their writing goals. Our retreats follow Rowena Murray's approach to social writing.
We pride ourselves on offering a supportive environment to help your progress. We take care of refreshments and lunch and provide structure to your day, so all you have to do is concentrate on your writing. You will also go away with some helpful tools to support your writing beyond the retreat.
Our coastal locations have been chosen to offer you a dose of inspiration and a mental break, giving your ‘writing brain’ some room to "breathe". Our events are held in easily accessible locations by public transport and have parking facilities. Providing our retreats from well-connected places, means you can come just for the day, although we always like to see you again!

Dr Gemma Donovan
Hi, I'm Gemma. I have more than 10 years experience of research and academic publishing. I still continue to publish in collaboration with academics and have found social structured writing retreats a really helpful way of getting my writing done, including my PhD thesis and academic papers. I'm an adopted 'Sand Dancer' (someone who lives in South Shields) and think that a coastal location is the perfect place to write.

Dr Nicky Hall
Hello, I'm Nicky. I have over 20 years experience of working in academia and other research related support roles. My research and publication record are in the fields of health services research and health related behaviours. I know just how difficult it can be juggling writing with busy day jobs and other commitments and am excited about helping provide a supportive environment to help you achieve your writing goals. I look forward to meeting you at one of our retreats.
