The Little Havel Hotel is our writing retreat venue for South Shields. It is located between the River Tyne and the South Shields coastline. Our writing room offers lovely views and the ideal location for inspiration and headspace for writing. There is free parking available, and the hotel is also within walking distance of South Shields metro station.
Getting to South Shields
South Shields is well connected by road and public transport to most North East locations and universities.
From Newcastle
You can get the Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow Line to South Shields. The metro station is a 20 minute walk (on the flat) to the Little Haven Hotel writing retreat venue.
From North Shields
You can get the ferry to South Shields. The ferry terminal is a 25 minute walk (on the flat) to the Little Haven Hotel writing retreat venue.
From Sunderland
You can take the 20 bus from Sunderland to the South Shields bus interchange (next to the metro station).
South Shields Metro to Little Haven Hotel
Exit the metro station and walk cross the pedestrian crossing into the main shopping street (King Street) then head right and carry on (past Morrisons on your left) and down Ocean Road. At the bottom of Ocean road enter North Marine Park and follow the path through the park. Or continue on Ocean Road until you see Havel Point and turn left and follow the park path through. Exit the park and cross the road, following the road path left. Turn right past the Harbour Drive North Car Park and follow the road to the Little Havel Hotel Entrance.
Physical activity
Writing retreats taking place in South Shields will include a gentle walk guided by the retreat facilitator along the South Shields coast. This is a flat walk on a dedicated promenade (although you are also welcome to walk in the sand or sea!)
Alternative options include gym facilitates and swimming pool at Haven Point which is close to the Little Haven hotel. There is also an outdoor gym located in North Marine Park a short (but uphill) walk from the retreat venue. The promenade includes use for bicycles for those who have brought their own bike.
